The sheep herd effect

What I’m reffering to is essentially the bird flu nuisance that is happening in the country. Lets just look back and count the number of bird flu victims in India till date …… its been five minutes since I started counting and I have reached the number ‘0’ null zilch.. The Indian masses have reacted more impulsively to this matter rather than approaching it with even a penny worth of logic. Just to state some simple facts the number of casualties in India due to tuberculosis is around 4,50,000 every year, so going by the bird flu reaction we should be moving around in space suits that equipped with an supply of TB free air or for that matter considering the Every day 3000 people die from malaria, why don’t all the men and women wear netted burkhas to cover them from head toe so that they are protected from malaria causing mosquitoes.

This is especially sickening considering the fact that more people are dying (poultry farmers) as a result of the scare then the disease itself. Poultry farming is the livelihood of a large section of the agriculture dependent population, and having your entire stock put down just because of some remote guy got a flu is as good as shooting yourself in the head just because your someone from neighboring town caught a cold. What’s even more aggravating is the fact the stocks killed by the authorities took years (even deacdes) of work for the poor farmers to achieve. The irony continues as one would expect other farmers to be unaffected, but instead those whose stock were spared the news is even worse they are supposed to keep the chicken in the pens until the dim wit population decides to calm down, all this while feeding the chickens to keep them alive, and in keeping them alive selling every worldly possession they have. It seems they are clinging onto the last straw (chickens), but how good is that considering that there is a whirlpool up ahead.

Just some figure to show the plight of the farmers : a hatchling costs around Rs12 a piece and by the time the hatchling transforms into a market worthy chicken weighing around 1200grams it has consumes around 4-5kgs of bird feed which costs anywhere between 4-5 Rs/kg , thus making the cost of raising a chicken Rs37. by now a framer can expect anywhere between 40-42 Rs/kg for his product. But if you happened to go to the market you would find the current price of chicken is around Rs 5perkg. Just to hammer the point further imagine what would you feel like if you were in the farmers shoes, seeing all your life’s work returning to sand before your own eyes.

Well I’m no dictator to order “chickens for every Indian’, but I honestly feel we are committing atrocities on the poor farmers. Just leaving you with a question. If people know that smoking definitely causes health problems, and then too more than 50% of the male population smoke tobacco and a simple unproven rumor about bird flu makes the entire nation give up chicken. Why? This just goes on to show we are no better than a flock of sheep doing what the sheep next to you is doing without applying thought or reason to it, and they say Indian race is clever. What a joke!

"On The Turning Away"

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?
